Dr. Robert Murrell Stevenson is Adjunct Professor at the Latin American Center for Graduate Studies in Music and Professor Emeritus at the University of California, Los Angeles. He received his AB from the University of Texas in 1936; studied piano at the Juilliard School of Music; composition and musicology at Yale University. He took private lessons in composition with Igor Stravinsky in 1939 and in piano with Arthur Schnabel in 1940. Dr. Stevenson received his Ph.D. from the Eastman School of Music, Rochester, NY in 1942; graduate degrees in Theology from Harvard and Princeton; and a B.Litt. in Musicology from Oxford University, UK in 1954. His career includes: Instructor at University of Texas, 1941-43, 1949; US Army Chaplain, 1942-46; recitals as concert pianist throughout his career; Lecturer of Church Music at Westminster Choir College, NJ, 1946-49; Music Faculty, 1949-, Professor of Music, 1961-, Faculty Research Lecturer, 1981-, University of California, Los Angeles; Visiting Professor to various universities. His compositions include: works for orchestra, piano, clarinet and piano, organ, mixed chorus. Dr. Stevenson's prolific publications include most especially his writings on Latin American, Spanish and Portuguese music, Italian Renaissance, and Baroque, including Music in Mexico, Historical Survey, 1952, Patterns of Protestant Church Music, 1953, Cathedral Music in Colonial Peru, 1959, Spanish Cathedral Music in The Golden Age, 1961, Renaissance and Baroque Musical Sources in the Americas, 1970, Guide to Caribbean Music History, 1975, Antologia da Música Portuguesa, 1490-1680, 1984, Spanish Cathedral Music in the Golden Age, 1961, Spanish trans.1992. He has made contributions to over 400 articles in the New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians and has written numerous articles in prestigious journals and books. Honors bestowed upon him include: research and teaching awards and fellowships, as well as honorary degrees.

During the Eighth Inter-American Music Education Conference, The Catholic University of America recognized the outstanding scholarly contribution of Professor Robert Stevenson by conferring upon him the degree Doctor of Music, Honoris Causa. Dr. Stevenson is the Director of Doctoral Dissertations for the Latin American Center for Graduate Studies in Music.
