The Benjamin T. Rome School of Music of the Catholic University of America, in cooperation with the Organization of American States (OAS) and the Inter-American Music Council (CIDEM), established the Latin American Center for Graduate Studies in Music in 1984.
With this Center, The Catholic University of America has become the only institution in the Americas to offer a concentration in Latin American music in the following graduate degree programs:
• Chamber Music and Accompanying
• Composition
• Liturgical Music
• Musicology (History and Theory)
• Orchestral Instruments (Strings, Winds Percussion)
• Organ
• Piano
• Piano Pedagogy
• Voice
• Voice Pedagogy
The objectives of the Latin American Center for Graduate Studies in Music are:
1. to promote the study, research, and development of Latin American music;
2. to offer courses in Latin American music that may be applied to any graduate degree in music;
3. to compile a specialized library of scores, books, periodicals, microfilms, and recordings of Latin American music;
4. to encourage the exchange of students, scholars, performers, composers, and music educators between the United States and Latin American countries and the Iberian Peninsula;
5. to make on-site study possible by offering graduate courses in Latin American countries and the Iberian Peninsula.
The Latin American Center for Graduate Studies in Music, consistent with the mission of the Catholic University of America, recognizes that Latin America and the Iberian Peninsula have contributed vastly to the deposit of creative works inspired by the Catholic faith and is committed to the preservation and dissemination of this rich heritage.
The University’s location in the nation’s capital offers abundant cultural and intellectual resources to students at the Center.
